ISSUE 7
The changing temperature in October allows for layering both in practicality and playfulness. I use layering as a way to add texture and nuance to my looks. Whether it’s adding in a black cashmere vest under my blazer (that I found this summer onsale from The Row) or a turtleneck under a shirt with a coat, there are endless ways to create color contrast and variety through layering. My favorite inspiration for layering comes from Parisian women in particular. Since they wear a mostly neutral palette with occasional pops of color, their wardrobes lend to mixing and matching. Rather than bright hues, texture takes the lead. See my favorite ways to layer below.
1.
THE VEST
Vests offer versatility in your closet. Seen at The Row, Soeur and J.Crew, it’s a useful transitional knit. You can pair it in a more classic way with a button down shirt, with a white long-sleeve t-shirt or on its own for evening. Here are my favorite options from Margaret Howell, Guest in Residence and Extreme Cashmere.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
There are many ways to wear the vest but for autumn I love pairing it with a J.Crew tissue turtleneck in white for contrast with a Wardrobe.NYC menswear blazer and B Sides navy corduroy trousers. I would add in a black belt and loafers.
2.
THE DENIM JACKET OR SHIRT
Denim serves as a cornerstone to my wardrobe. This season I’m on the hunt for the perfect denim shirt or jacket. You can find one in faded black, dark blue or a vintage wash. I particularly like it layered under knitwear, coats and jackets to add dimension. My favorite denim jackets are by Ralph Lauren (I love this Barn jacket style), Anine Bing, Old Stone Trade and a new brand called RÙADH.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
You can wear a denim jacket in many different ways but my favorite layering trick is to mix a denim jacket with a J.Crew black turtleneck, Wardrobe.NYC trench coat and a Moismont bandana scarf from Cutter Brooks. I also like the following classic trench options from Toteme and Massimo Dutti.
3.
THE SCARF
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen wear scarves better than anyone I know. They know how to use scarves as a layering piece to add texture and contrast. Instead of a black scarf, Ashley added a subtle hint of chocolate brown. My current favorites include Johnstons of Elgin (made in Scotland), From The Road (made in Nepal), Toteme and &Daughter (also made in Scotland).
HOW TO WEAR IT …
I love mixing various neutral shades. Pair an ivory scarf from Toteme with a black overcoat from Cos, a wool grey shirt from Loulou Studio styled open over a white tissue turtleneck from J.Crew.
THE DESTINATION:
TINA BARNEY AT THE JEU DE PAUME
Since 1975, American photographer Tina Barney has captured the inner lives of subjects within their homes. She magnifies the textures and colors of her subjects’ clothes, furniture and surroundings, highlighting the habits that inform their behaviors. Her images have always been an inspiration to me and I’ll be visiting her latest show at the Jeu de Paume in Paris soon.
