ISSUE 6
Autumn stands out as my favorite season in terms of style. You can play with more pieces - layering knitwear, coats or accessorizing with a leather glove. Last weekend in New York, I wore a new corduroy blazer from Dagmar and realized it was the exact piece I needed to make my look feel fresh. I recommend taking inventory of your closet in September – what pieces can you add to your everyday look without purchasing an entire outfit? This season I went for a brown tote from The Row (it’s simple but I’ve worn it every day) and I’m on the hunt for a black low-heeled ankle boot. I rarely make large purchases but you only need a few pieces to feel new again.
1.
THE COUNTRY JACKET
I love looking through old Barbour advertisements featuring the classic country jacket. I’ve worn a vintage Barbour in the countryside for years and when I first saw Toteme and The Row designing similar styles, I never felt the need to buy an updated version. However, I’ve changed my mind and am gravitating towards a polished take on this style. Instead of wearing it in a country context, it looks modern when paired back with your favorite city uniform.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
Instead of wearing the country jacket with denim, I suggest wearing it with black cotton pants from High Sport (they are incredibly made and beyond comfortable), a black turtleneck knit from Cos (when I see people wearing them they look identical to The Row), ballet flats from Mansur Gavriel and a brown tote from The Row. For other country jackets there’s this from Everlane (although lighter weight) and Massimo Dutti.
2.
THE CORDUROY BLAZER
I live in blazers and corduroy adds texture and a hint of seventies. This style from Dagmar allows you to wear a knit underneath while also layering it under a winter coat. I’m wearing mine with all black or blue denim for a true vintage feel.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
I love wearing my corduroy blazer with all black - it gives it a sharpness and modern edge - but I also suggest pairing it back to denim. Since the shape of the blazer is streamlined, it won’t look too seventies. I have my eye on a denim shirt and pant from Alexa Chung’s new collaboration for Madewell. Add a navy Everlane knit and square toe loafers from Le Monde Beryl.
3.
THE LEATHER JACKET
Leather and suede outerwear are everywhere this season. It’s a great way to add a statement to your everyday look. I love this car coat version from Soeur - the chocolate brown feels less harsh than black and it has a classic shape that will never go out of style.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
Lighten the brown leather jacket with classic 501 Levi’s in ecru, a white t-shirt from Auralee, a grey cardigan from Extreme Cashmere and Phoebe Philo club slippers.
THE DESTINATION:
FONDAZIONE IRIS
Cy Twombly’s home in Rome has inspired me for many years and I can’t wait to visit his old studio and home in Bassano, a 17th century palazzo acquired in 1975 called Fondazione Iris. He painted his most significant works here, finding inspiration through the landscape of Tuscany. The site will be used as an exhibition and performance space as well as a center for scholars who want to research Cy’s library.
