ISSUE 5
This month I’m drawn to American classics as a fresh way to update your wardrobe before autumn. It’s about mixing new pieces together that feel refined but also undone, which perfectly captures my mood at the moment. Not only does Jennifer Lawrence serve as inspiration for pairing unexpected classics together but Sofia Coppola and Lauren Hutton embody it as well. Whether it’s a field jacket, moccassins or a western inspired belt, these pieces will never go out of style.
1.
THE CANOE MOCCASIN
The preppy classic feels new again after walking the Miu Miu and Bally runways. My favorite style is from Quoddy of Maine, handcrafted since 1909 with local leathers and lined in dark green Napa suede. There’s the high fashion style from Bally but I love the originals.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
The key is to mix the preppy moccasin with modern silhouettes. Pair with black slouchy denim from Jeanerica, a canvas work jacket from Buck Mason and a polished belt from Nili Lotan. This is the perfect weekend outfit or for a casual work day.
2.
THE POLO NECK
Polo necks remind me of American prep school uniforms but throughout the decades have made their way into the high fashion realm. I recently came across &Daughter, a brand who works with five different makers from the Borders of Scotland and the West Coast of Donegal. Each jumper is knit individually and linked together by hand to make the garment as strong as possible. A lasting investment.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
Polo neck knits have a refined yet casual mood to them. Pair with a straight leg trouser from Maria McManus, a snakechain necklace from Missoma, suede sandals from Birkenstock and a camel leather bag from Hunting Season.
3.
THE WESTERN BELT
Belts are the cornerstone of a classic wardrobe. They serve as an anchor and can make a casual outfit feel refined. I’ve worn a classic belt the past two years, but this season I’m updating with a western inspired belt by Celine. It’s my favorite addition to denim, a slouchy suit or even a knit dress.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
I love a hint of western, inspired by archival Ralph Lauren images. The key is choosing one piece and mixing it with modern classics. Wear the Celine belt with a crisp with shirt from Alex Mill, dark denim from AGOLDE, the Khaite “Marfa” boot and a striped cashmere knit from Allude worn on the shoulders.
THE DESTINATION:
SUN TUNNELS
I’ve always wanted to visit Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels in the remote valley of Utah’s Great Basin Desert. The four sculptures, created between 1973-76, frame the sun on the horizon during the summer and winter solstices. Each tunnel has a series of holes corresponding with various constellations, sculpting the sun’s light through land and sky.
