ISSUE 4
Friends always ask about eveningwear advice - what to wear and how to find it. It takes a lot of research to find the right look for a particular event and I often end up in tailoring. One of my most worn evening looks is a Celine tuxedo blazer and trouser that I wear with black flats or a sling-back heel. It never goes out of style and I reinvent it with a new bag or earrings. However, in the summer, dresses are necessary and in this issue I’m sharing my favorite options for the balmy summer months.
1.
THE DRINKS TO DINNER DRESS
Tove is one of the brands I look to for special occasions or when I’m in need of a dress. The styles are feminine but with modern shapes and clean lines. Although this dress has become a staple for the brand, I’m still drawn to the shape and low neckline. I also love their take on a slip dress and this one from Another Tomorrow in deep navy.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
I like to find subtle ways to update an evening look. I love Le Monde Beryl’s mesh flat - an update to the classic ballet slipper that you can wear with a dress, trousers or tailored shorts. Sophie Buhai is another go-to brand for evening accessories (which I’ve featured before). Her drop earrings give the feminine pearl a modern update and I also have one of her hand-crafted satin scrunchies. In terms of makeup, I’m a minimalist and Merit’s flush balm gives a subtle summer glow.
2.
THE NIGHTTIME SANDALS
I typically wear flat sandals all summer but for a specific occasion I love mid-heel. I have similar sandals from Toteme that work perfectly with a long dress or summer trouser. If you’re looking for a flat evening sandal, I love these charm sandals from The Row.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
This is my summer version of black tie. I bought this knotted Toteme dress in June (now on sale) and it’s one of the most flattering styles I own. I can’t wait to get my hands on these Jil Sander earrings that I will also wear with a tuxedo suit. The Savette Tondo chain bag gives the look an old school glamour as well as a classic red lip from Hermès.
3.
THE EVENING CLUTCH
Attersee’s “Brea” bag has two functions, it works as an essentials day pouch or when snapped it becomes the perfect evening clutch. Navy looks great with all neutrals and I especially like it paired back to black. I also love the wide striped version for summer.
HOW TO WEAR IT …
A crisp white shirt paired with a skirt reminds me of classic Carolina Herrera or Carolyn Besette-Kennedy. Pair the Nanushka satin skirt with a tailored white shirt from Theory and delicate earrings from Ted Muehling, one of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s favorite jewelers who draws inspiration from organic shapes in nature. Add in a barely there black sandal from ATP Atelier.
THE DESTINATION:
LE VEAU D’OR
Le Veau d’Or, opening on Tuesday in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, dates back to 1937 and has the feel of an old school bistro with red-check table cloths and seasonal French food by chef-proprietors Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr who worked at Frenchette, Balthazar and Le Rock. The tiny six-seat front bar will be perfect for an evening aperitif.
